Meet The Team
Dr Ian Gates PhD, PEng
Dr. Ian D. Gates is a Professor of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering and the Associate Vice President (Research & Innovation) at the University of Calgary. He also directs the university’s CFREF $75 million sustainable low-carbon unconventional resources program, a key initiative in advancing environmentally sustainable energy technologies. Before joining academia in 2004, Dr. Gates spent seven years in industry, where he gained extensive experience that continues to inform his research, which spans heavy oil, oil sands technology, hydrogen, methane, and energy system material science.
An accomplished inventor and entrepreneur, Dr. Gates has co-founded several companies, including Gushor (acquired by Schlumberger in 2013), Proton Technologies (focused on clean hydrogen from petroleum), and Solideum (exploring non-fuel uses of heavy oil), among others. He holds 45 awarded and pending patents and has authored over 119 peer-reviewed papers, 160 conference proceedings, and a reservoir engineering book. Dr. Gates was awarded the Frank Spragins Technical Award in 2019 by APEGA for his integrity, technical expertise, and impactful contributions to engineering. His research group’s motto—“save money, make money, save the environment, and save life”—reflects his commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship.
